Merchandise Control Manager

Job Description Summary:
Directly manages the daily operations within their local Fulfillment/Distribution Center's Merchandise Control department. Partners with Operations, Merchandising, Planning and Allocation, and Finance to communicate vendor compliance issues and uphold quality and accuracy control standards. Hires, trains, develops, and leads Merchandise Control staff to effectively streamline the quality control and accuracy processes, resulting in lower distribution costs and an accurate inventory position.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  1. Manages the daily operations of the local Fulfillment Center's (FC/DC) Merchandising Control department. Ensures that the standards of merchandise and accuracy control are always upheld within the Fulfillment Center.
  2. Partners with FC/DC Operations Management to ensure priorities and business goals are achieved.
  3. Oversees the proper execution and resolution of Inbound Purchase Order issues, Damages, Donations, RTVs (Returns to Vendors), Cross-Dock, Holds, and Product Recalls.
  4. Provides strategic oversight to Merchandise Control Supervisors within assigned FC/DC.
  5. Assists the Manager of Merchandise Control in the implementation and execution of company initiatives to the FC/DC.
  6. Performs scheduled walkthroughs of assigned FC/DC with Merchandise Control Supervisors and partners with Operations to provide direction, support, and ensure quality control and accuracy standards are upheld to achieve business goals.
  7. Provides staffing to meet current and future needs. Ensures all staff associates understand FC/DC transactions and the effect on shrink within the FC/DC and partners with LP, Finance, and Operations to research and resolve inventory discrepancies.
  8. Accurately determines staffing and other needs to support business needs. Builds and cultivates effective teams through education and encouraging staff to think independently and problem-solve.
  9. Develops bench strength and succession planning within the FC/DC. Holds staff accountable to company standards related to Fashion, Quality, Price, and Brand.
  10. Educates and guides staff through the gray areas and subtleties of merchandising. Ensures Associates understand all inventory transactions and the effect on overall inventory health/accuracy and vendor relations.
  11. Creates a network of influence with peers, Operations Management, Merchandising, Planning and Allocation, Finance, LP, Transportation, IT, and Vendor Compliance.
  12. Encourages staff to effectively challenge business decisions that relate to inventory accuracy and quality control.
  13. Models and supports corporate philosophies on diversity, mutual respect, and open-door policy; builds constructive relationships.
  14. Leads team in demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to changes in the business.
  15. Special projects as assigned.

Job Knowledge

Minimum formal education required:
Bachelor's Degree in Business, retailing, or equivalent job experience.

Minimum job skills required:

  • Extensive knowledge of merchandising and inventory control.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Clear understanding of fashion, quality, price, and brand requirements and their business impact.
  • Understanding of merchandising business strategies and how they impact FC infrastructure and network operations.
  • Understanding of inventory transactions and their impact on shrink and vendor payments.
  • Adaptable and possesses excellent negotiating skills.
  • Ability to influence all levels of management in FC Operations and Merchandising/Planning.
  • Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Minimum experience required:
Minimum 6 years' experience, with 3-5 years of management experience and 3-5 years of merchandising experience.

This position has a starting salary range of $83,100.00 to $106,000.00 per year. Actual starting pay is determined by a number of factors, including relevant skills, qualifications, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual incentive as well as long-term incentives.
